Derval by Gráinne Keenan
Friday Jul 10, 2020
Friday Jul 10, 2020
This week's Super Paua Story is Derval, by Gráinne Keenan.
"The thing about Derval was that she had a serious affliction. She didn’t actually want to stab Angela Fitzgerald’s birthday trampoline with a knife or smash her face into the birthday cake. Or yank Donal Higgins’ trousers down in front of everyone at lunch. Or cover all the boys’ toilet seats with cling film. Or plant worms in Neasa Toohill’s ham sandwich. She didn’t want to do these things but there was something powerful and irresistible inside that made her do them. Every time she tried to make a friend, her own mischievous urges got in the way. "

"Bill the Bear, though he didn’t much care,
was told he had bad luck
To be born with legs long and limber
but had no arms nor thumbs to suck.
Bill laughed at friends cutting finger nails
wasting so much of their lives
But sometimes felt a little sad
watching them clap and give high fives."

This week's Super Paua Story is Fiachra and the Biscuit Tin Garden, by Alison Martin.
"The next few weeks would be a crucial time in Nan and Fiachra’s preparations. It was Nan’s dream to take home the gold prize and only one thing stood in her way – Petronella Hastings; bean ard a bhí i gcónaí ag cruthú rí rá agus ruaille buaille. Bhuaigh sí an comórtas anuraidh agus an bhliain roimhe sin. Agus deirtear go slíbhín ceart í..."

"But on nights when Mam wasn’t around, Granny and I would watch tv programmes about my favourite topic: space. I was obsessed with space, so much so that Granny nicknamed me her ‘little alien’. I loved pretending to be an alien from another planet. I always thought humans were so boring compared to the endless possibilities that existed in the alien world. Space was for everyone. It didn’t matter if you were a girl or a boy or whatever. In space, everyone was equal and nothing was weird."

"Wait! There in the distance, there’s a pinprick of light. Do you want to see? Is it far away in the distance? It’s out of your touch. Stretch out those fingers, go on. Stretch some more. Maybe you can touch it. A star moving across the night sky, a silvery streak, a fuzzy blur. Or maybe it’s a firework about to burst open and crack into the night sky, spitting out its fantastic colours. Ooooh. Aaaaaah."

"I'm only supposed to come up to the attic on Saturday nights, because stargazing is a late night activity. Doesn't matter these days. Can't sleep at night. Can't focus during the day. Whole neighbourhood is the same."
